Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United Adds Expanded Story Events, Universal

Square Enix has shared new details on Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United in a new broadcast.

One of the biggest changes concerns the story. The original Romancing SaGa 3 could leave players unsure why they were fighting the Four Sinistrals, sealing Abyss Gates, heading east, or becoming involved with the Child of Destiny.

The remake adds events that flesh out each of the eight protagonists and better explain motivations and story developments that were present in the setting but not always communicated clearly in the original.

One example is the Matriarch’s Mausoleum in Lance, where a Mausoleum Tour has been added to provide more context surrounding concepts such as the Rise of Morastrum.

The opening structure has also changed. Players will first experience the Loanne uprising and become familiar with all eight characters before selecting their lead.

Recruitment is also considerably less restrictive. Katarina can now join the party even when she is not selected as the protagonist. Every character can be recruited regardless of which protagonist is chosen, including combinations such as Monica and Mikhail that were not possible in the original.

Characters who were previously difficult to remove from the party have also been adjusted. The Bard and Tatyana can be dismissed after some resistance, while Herman will call attention to himself when story progression requires his presence.

Commander Mode will not return. The team explained that developing a separate battle system for it would have taken resources away from the main combat system. Combination magic has instead been reworked in a form closer to Romancing SaGa 2, while formation techniques have been converted into individual attacks.

Several mini-games are returning with changes. Mass Combat now displays two morale gauges so players can track both front and rear lines more clearly.

The remake also introduces an Adventure Log similar to the Imperial Chronicle in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. It records events tied to characters the player has met and lets players set objectives from the log.

Save points are now multifunctional locations. They restore LP and BP, allow saving, and let players swap party members without returning to find them in person. They do not disappear after use.

Difficulty settings and the option to switch between the original and arranged soundtrack will also be available. Several other systems have been changed. Fixed and character-specific equipment can be removed, though some effects remain exclusive to their original user.

The Labyrinth of Darkness content added in the remaster will not return as a separate area. Its monsters and items have instead been redistributed elsewhere. Magic has also been strengthened, and spells are learned through post-battle inspiration.

Development is not being handled by a single studio. Xeen continues to play a major role, but roughly 10 companies are contributing to the project.

Thanks to Famitsu for sharing this news.

Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United will launch for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and PC via Steam on February 16, 2027.
