Sega's Lost RPG Returns on PC 28 Years Later

Panzer Dragoon Saga is back after almost three decades, and PC gamers couldn't be happier to return to the classic RPG.

Sega Saturn emulator developer Yaba Sanshiro has officially unveiled his PC port of Panzer Dragoon Saga. In a recent Twitter post from the devMiyax account, it was confirmed that the "Recompiled for PC" version is playable in its entirety, with the title now being available for fans to download for themselves.

Panzer Dragoon Saga Is Finally Playable On PC

Directed by franchise creator Yukio Futatsugi and designed by Manabu Kusunoki, Panzer Dragoon Saga (Azel Panzerdragoon) was released in 1998 for the Sega Saturn as the third entry in the fan-favorite Panzer Dragoon series. Like the first two games before it, Panzer Dragoon Saga was produced by Team Andromeda, although it looked far different than its predecessors.

The post-apocalyptic fantasy RPG traded in the rail shooter stylings of Panzer Dragoon and Panzer Dragoon II Zwei for its own unique semi-turn-based battle system. Panzer Dragoon Saga also allowed players to explore a surprisingly expansive world from atop their high-flying dragon mount. Players take on the role of Edge, a mercenary working for the Empire who only barely escapes a brazen attack by the dreaded Black Fleet, all thanks to a mysterious dragon with which he quickly forms a deep bond.

Upon its release, Panzer Dragoon Saga was met with widespread acclaim from both critics and gamers alike, and went on to be the highest-rated Sega Saturn title by multiple major industry outlets such as GameRankings. Unfortunately, Panzer Dragoon Saga was barely marketed by Sega, and was printed in far lower numbers than other mainstream titles.

Shortly after the release of Panzer Dragoon Saga, Team Andromeda was disbanded, leaving its members to move to other teams and projects, and the Panzer Dragoon franchise in the hands of Smilebit for its fourth entry, Panzer Dragoon Orta, released for the Xbox in 2002. Since then, Panzer Dragoon Saga has become an increasingly difficult game to find, not just for its vintage statues, but for the fact that it hasn't received a single remake or re-release for any major (official) platform.

That being said, the original Panzer Dragoon was re-released in the form of a remake from MegaPixel Studio and Forever Entertainment back in 2020, giving fans a chance to revisit the very first game in the franchise. The Panzer Dragoon remake boasted updated graphics and a new control system, the latter of which ended up being widely derided by players. In fact, the Panzer Dragoon remake was met with generally middling reviews as a whole, effectively shuttering hopes for further remakes of other entries in the series.
