One of the most controversial characters in the entire Star Trek franchise is about to make a major comeback courtesy of Magic: The Gathering.
On November 13, Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek is slated to arrive in stores around the globe, and fans of both franchises couldn't be more excited. While dozens of fan-favorite Star Trek characters will be counted among those joining Magic: The Gathering, few are anywhere near as exciting as Spock's very own father, Sarek, who is sure to be leading countless Bant Commander decks in the months to come.
Sarek, Federation Ambassador Is Set to Be Bant's Next Big Thing
Sarek, Federation Ambassador is a Legendary Creature - Vulcan Advisor with a decidedly low stat block for his cost. That being said, Sarek's Federation ability more than makes up for his shortcomings in terms of raw power. At the beginning of combat on Sarek's controller's turn, they draw a card for every five non-Borg creature types among those they control. If the player draws more than three cards with Sarek's ability, they also put two +1/+1 counters on each creature they control.
This turns any given deck's diversity of creature types into its biggest strength, especially for Commander decks with Sarek at the helm. Notably, players won't be able to cheat out dozens of draws by playing a Changeling, as those will be counted as a Borg along with every other creature type in Magic: The Gathering.
Sarek was originally portrayed by Mark Lenard, with the character making his debut in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Journey to Babel" all the way back in 1967. The father of Spock and husband to Amanda Grayson, Sarek is one of the most complex yet oft-forgotten characters from the Star Trek franchise, even in spite of playing a key role across numerous storylines and nearly a dozen different Star Trek films and series.

As a Federation Ambassador, Sarek was crucial in ensuring the success of different political relationships, not to mention that of the Federation as a whole. As a Vulcan who married a human, however, Sarek is an incredibly controversial figure among his own people, most of whom cannot even begin to comprehend his specific form of logic.
Of course, Sarek is just one of a myriad of Star Trek icons who will be making their way into the world of Magic: The Gathering on November 13. Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek will be available in both Play and Collector Boosters, along with a whole host of other products, including four new Commander decks, both a standard Bundle and exclusive Beam Me Up Bundle Box, a new Draft Night kit, and two new Scene Boxes featuring the Divergent Timeline and Enterprise-Q. Unfortunately, collectors hoping to get their hands on a Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek Beginner Box won't get that chance, as that particular product was canceled back in early October.
Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek goes on sale November 13.
