The Axis Saga: War Of Silence is a new gothic fantasy campaign setting from Wyldwolf Games featuring a world filled with unique locations, factions and NPCs, creatures, campaign hooks and more along with new mechanics, classes, and subclasses for 5e and 5.5e of Dungeons & Dragons. Ahead of its release, TechRaptor got to exclusively learn about The Resonant, a new class focused on understanding the "pattern that binds magic and the universe together."

In the world of The Axis Saga there is a new gameplay system called Resonance, when major events happen in a place it can leave an imprint on the location that with the right toolset can be investigated. The Resonant is a class that has trained to be able to detect the Resonance and be able to "investigate, interact with, and eventually manipulate" it.

Resonants are detectives, scholars, hunters, and duelists united by a simple conviction: Nothing Is Beyond Understanding

Wyldwolf explained that there are two major ways that The Resonant approach utilizing Resonance while adventuring. The first of which is to Analyze Resonance. When in a place that could have seen "a battle soaked in blood, a ritual repeated for generations, or even a moment of intense collective emotion" the Resonant is able to study the Resonance to reconstruct the event and learn more about them.

From a roleplay perspective, it allows for greater insight into events that have transpired and creates a way for you to play as a supernatural detective and see what others cannot. For a DM running a game in the world of The Axis Saga it opens up a variety of avenues for your players to get insight into dark events or learn of some hidden intricacies to your big bad's plan.

The Resonant in combat is able to use their understanding of Resonance to understand the subtleties of their opponent to gain the upper hand. Some examples provided were the ability to identify "weaknesses in an enemy's body, mind, or supernatural pattern."

As a Resonant, you'll also find yourself not just with abilities that let you interact with Resonance, but Wyldwolf Games has teased that their new Campaign Setting book, The Axis Saga: War of Silence, will also feature new spells and equipment that also interact with Resonance.

How The Resonant Expands On Current Dungeons & Dragons Abilities

Looking to compare The Resonant with other previously available Dungeons & Dragons classes and Sub-Classes it seems to merge and enhance the abilities of the Blood Hunter's Grim Psychometry allowing you to "discerning the secrets surrounding mysterious relics or places touched by evil" and possibly "experience brief visions of the past connected to the object or location." and the Way of the Cobalt Soul Monk's Extract Aspects letting you use your Flurry of Blows on a creature to "learn all of its damage vulnerabilities, damage resistances, damage immunities, and condition immunities."

How The Resonant expands upon this though is not just tying this investigation to relics or places touched by evil, but those with strong emotions across the spectrum. Used well by a DM it can allow the players to be learning breadcrumbs of a big bad's plot without having to place them in the same room and worry about the players starting a fight they're clearly not ready for.
