If you have tried to throw down in Pokemon Champions, organize your boxes in Pokemon Home, or feed Snorlax berries in Pokemon Sleep during the last 12 hours, you will have noticed those games are currently offline. That's seemingly due to a PHP vulnerability that leaves apps and websites that use it vulnerable to cybersecurity threats.
Why Pokemon Home, Champions, And Sleep Are "Undergoing Maintenance"
If you try to access any of those three Pokemon games right now, you are met with an error message that claims the games are down for maintenance. That's only partly true. The games are indeed offline, but not to be maintained. It's while fixes are rolled out to address the security problems that are affecting significant parts of the internet.
PHP is a programming language used, in part, by 70% of apps and websites. According to BBC, two vulnerabilities in the programming language were discovered and even though fixes were issued on Wednesday, those who use PHP have been advised to take down anything that uses it until the problem is resolved.
The Breach Is Causing Big Headaches Worldwide
While Pokemon appears to be one of, if not the only major video game company affected, the breach has had a wider, potentially very scary impact in other industries around the world. Various governments and councils have taken services offline while the issues are addressed, and even the BBC itself has removed parts of its website that run on PHP.
PHP has been used since the early '90s, effectively for as long as the internet as we know it has existed, and apparently the breach could affect every version of the model going back to PHP 5, which was rolled out in 2004. Naturally, that means countless companies, websites, and industries are at risk of people with malicious intentions using the gaps in its security to perform nefarious actions.
When exactly you'll be able to go back to ranking up in Pokemon Champions and feeding Snorlax in Pokemon Sleep remains unclear. Again, the issues have been addressed and fixes issued; however, it's up to the individual companies affected to assess whether the update was applied before the breach posed a risk to their services. Until The Pokemn Company can unequivocally confirm that it's safe to do so, all three games will remain offline.
